Dialysis Rewards

Children battling kidney disease are forced to lead different very lives than other kids their age. They have rigid diet restrictions, physically look different and constantly feel sick. Because dialysis treatment requires a large time commitment, the patients normally miss out on school and social interactions at least three days a week. This can wear on the kids emotionally, causing them to become depressed and less compliant with their treatment plans.

Finding innovative methods of addressing the resistance and non-compliance demonstrated by children on dialysis would be a worthwhile and meaningful undertaking. Although the Cavett Kids Foundation may not be able to cure the diseases or make the pain disappear for all dialysis patients at The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center, we are in the infant stages of partnering with the Pediatric Dialysis Unit Staff in creating some innovative methods to help motivate patients to live healthier lives.

The Pediatric Dialysis Unit has developed a “rewards program” for the dialysis patients. The ultimate goal of the program is to encourage healthy behaviors and teach responsibility to the patients through positive reinforcements. The program allows patients to earn “Kidney Kash” by being compliant with their treatment plan on a regular basis. For example, when the medical staff routinely monitors the patient’s fluid, phosphorus and potassium levels, they can compare the results to the previous levels and give the patient Kidney Kash for positive results or improvements. The patients collect Kidney Kash to either purchase a small item each week or can choose to save up their Kash to purchase a larger item, such as a DVD movie or a model car. The kids feel empowered by the program and are motivated by having a tangible goal to attain.
