Kamp Kidney

Kamp Kidney is designed for kids who have been diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease and are either on dialysis or have had a kidney transplant. It is a 5 day camp that takes place every year during the first week of June at Central Christian Camp and Conference Center in Guthrie, OK. It is the oldest kidney camp in the nation.
We are very fortunate to be able to dialyze our patients at Camp. Fresenius, a company that provides dialysis products, generously donates and delivers four dialysis machines. Our amazing team of Dialysis Nurses spend several days sterilizing the camp facilities and setting up the dialysis area. They work 24 hours a day during Kamp Kidney. Not only do they dialyze patients during the day and constantly distribute medications, but they also work around the clock helping our Peritoneal Dialysis patients at all hours of the night.

This camp provides each child the opportunity to meet others who share the problems of diet and fluid restriction and other aspects of a chronic disease. Children battling kidney disease are forced to lead different lives than other kids their age. They have rigid diet restrictions, physically look different and constantly feel sick. Because dialysis treatment requires a large time commitment, the patients normally miss out on school and social interactions at least three days a week. This can wear on the kids emotionally, causing them to become depressed and less compliant with their treatment plans.

Interested in Volunteering?
Volunteering at one of our camps is an amazing experience. You will be able to spend quality time with the campers and help bring joy into to their lives. Our camps need more volunteers than regular camps due to the severity of some of our campers illnesses. The campers need more assistance than healthy children.
Being a counselor is a rewarding yet sometimes challenging job. Each cabin has anywhere from 8-16 campers, and we strive to have anywhere from 3-5 counselors in each cabin as well. Counselors help to encourage the campers to meet friends and get involved at camp. They bond with the campers and help teach them valuable lessons. They help remind the campers to go to the nurses cabin to take their medicine, And most importantly, they help the campers have fun!
How to become a Volunteer
There are three steps to our official volunteer process.
1. Volunteer Application: This is a simple online application that gives us basic information about you! Click here to fill out the volunteer application. (Currently Unavailable).
2. Background Check: Cavett Kids require that all volunteers obtain and pay for their own background check. The cost is $15. You will not be allowed to volunteer at camp unless we have a background check on file. ***OU Medical Center employees and OUHSC students do not have to get a background check.
Click here to download the official Background Check Form. Fill out the form and obtain the background check in one of the following ways: fax, mail or in person. Requests will be returned in the same manner as received--- Just make sure we get the final confirmation!
- Fax: If you submit the form by fax, they will send the background check confirmation directly to us. I put our fax number on the form. When you submit the form by fax, you must pay by credit card.
- Mail: When you submit the form by mail, you can pay with a check or a credit card. If you submit the form by mail, you must include a stamped envelope addressed to:
OU Medical Center
Chaplain Services/Cavett Kids Foundation
P.O. Box 26307
1200 Everett Drive, Room 2311
Oklahoma City, OK 73126
- In Person: If you submit the form in person, they will give the confirmation to you directly. Please make sure to return the response to us.
Once we recieve the results of your background check, we will be able to process your application completely and will let you know if you have been chosen to be a counselor at KK2010.
3. Volunteer Confidentiality and Release Forms
Once you have completed steps 1 and 2, we will let you know if you have been chosen as a volunteer. At that time, we will send you the Volunteer Confidentiality and Release Forms. These need to be signed and returned before camp begins.
